LANDSCAPE USES Orixa japonica (Japanese orixa) is deciduous mounding or spreading shrub from Japan, China, and Korea and makes an excellent hedge plant. O. japonica is drought resistant and tolerates partial shade. Although the leaves emit an unpleasant odor when crushed, they display an interestingly ghostly fall color as they fade to a very pale yellow.
